CHAPTER SIXTEEN
"S
ee?" Chris asked as the midnight signal silently issued its command within the museum.
Caretaker watched with increasing alarm as the lights proceeded to dim and the automated machines, emerging from the bowels of the craft, scurried about in a frenzied fashion. Caretaker knew about all the systems, naturally, but what bothered him, was that he had never witnessed them in action.
"As far as I can tell, your genetically modified persona is designed to ignore inconsistencies, anomalies and infractions of the norm. You have never seen this occur because you would have zonked out with the signal, returning to your bed or dissolving into the deck depending on your, um... circumstances. You awake each morning with absolutely no recollection of the previous day. All other memories of your previous life are mostly intact."
"It is the way the Habitats were designed. To keep the inhabitants acting as typically as possible. If the creat... inhabitants detected a falseness to their surroundings they would likely revolt or worse. It was imperative to keep them believing that everything was normal," explained Caretaker in a melancholic tone.
"So tell me, was this all just a great curiosity? A freak show for you guys?"
"Oh, no, no, no. It was an in-depth study of volatile species within the galaxy. To understand it, you would have to know about our history. For as long as I can remember our planet has suffered the volatility of two distinct factions at war with one another. The northern hemisphere at odds with the southern. The southern people rejected the extreme advances of our society to revert to a more primitive lifestyle, which they believed to be free and harmonious. That is why we included those little things in our station," said Caretaker pointing to Vox.
"That 'little thing' is, Vox, a friend of mine. A highly intelligent friend of mine."
"Begging your pardon, Vox. I was speaking with the ingrained mantra of our race, one of supreme superiority. Admittedly, I agreed with that sentiment up to a while ago. That is no longer the case, so forgive my rude manner of speech, please?"
"Vox not care, call bad name. Vox know how Vox think."
"The only thing both factions retained regardless of their new philosophies was their weaponry and its continuing development. The south was determined to stand strong against any northern invasion. The north was convinced that the south planned an invasion because of the intense build-up of arms and personnel at the equatorial borders. Over the centuries both sides accumulated enough firepower to wipe out all life on a planetary scale.
"The north decided to mount an expedition to discover other forms of life in the galaxy, intent on finding a possible solution. The Constellation, manufactured at great expense to the treasury and resources, housed the many exhibits gathered over a vast time-scale. They discovered a myriad of different species with varying intellects. During the history of the Constellation thousands of species have been studied over the course of their evolution. This ancient structure has
